Anyone wondering what to sow in July? If you are so inclined, here are some suggestions.
However, considering our hardiness zone, which - according to this hardiness zone map - is 6a (with winter temperatures dipping to around -23° to -20° C), it might be too late for plants such as carrots, turnips, chard and beets.
Rule of thumb: You need to know the first frost date for your area (Guelph, for example, is Sept. 25, Kicthener, is Sept. 27, Stratford is October 2, while Brantford is October 4) - which you can look up here. Look up the days to maturity (DTM) on the seed packet of your chosen plant and count back the days from your first frost date.
To make up for crops growing slower as the days get shorter and shorter, add about 10-15 days to the DTM to be sure to harvest a worthwhile crop. You can find more details here.
