Hello from Pfenning’s Organic,
Here we go with our STORE NEWS and SPECIALS update for November 21-27! Bundle up, it's cold out there.
Feel free to visit our Online Catalogue to see any items that are featured or on special at the top of the page.
Store Notes from Almut:
- Missed out on the last FRESH CHICKENS? Surprisingly, another batch came up! These last Fresh Birds will be arriving at the Pfenning's Store on December 7th. As before, if you are interested, get your name on the Chicken List. They are $5.25/lb fresh, $5.50/lb if you want them frozen. They are being butchered on Dec. 6th.
These Chickens are very tender and there are some pretty big ones to be had too - in case you are thinking BIG Christmas Chicken instead of Turkey.
- locally grown by organic standards
- outside access to grass and sunshine (before the snow came), free-run
- organic feed
Order Online or give us a call at the Store: 519-725-4282.
Produce NEWS:
- We have Ontario 3 lb Empire Apples in the Store - YES, LOCAL APPLES!
- We have two varieties of Pears: Bosc Pears (3lb bags) and Bartlett Pears (3lb bags and loose) from B.C.
- Cantaloupe Melons ($4.75 ea) and Mini Watermelons ($3.50 ea) are keeping the Fruit Department more interesting.
- All the 5lb bags of Yellow, Red and Russet Potatoes are still $5.00 each.
- 2lb Blue Potatoes are the ongoing treat. The taste of Blue Potatoes has been described as rich and nutty, similar to the yellow flesh potato. Giv'em a try!
As you can see, nothing too exciting going on in the veggie world. We're still transitioning from local to import and the American Thanksgiving this week has everything a bit in limbo.
You may have heard about the risk of E. coli contamination in Romaine Lettuce in the News today (in Ontario, Quebec and some US states). The investigations are ongoing, and the source of the contamination has not yet been determined. At this time, there is no official recall. However, until further information is available, the Pfenning's Farm will voluntarily NOT be shipping ANY Romaine as a precautionary measure.
We are also voluntarily holding off with offering Romaine at this time until the problem has been clarified. As recommended by the Canadian Public Health and the CDC in the US, it is advised to dispose of any Romaine you currently have and clean your food preparation areas thoroughly. The Pfenning's Farm's US Romaine supplier is confident that their Organic Romaine Lettuce will not be identified in this situation. However, they are following and respecting CDC’s Food Safety advisory and are not harvesting or shipping their Romaine for the time being.
We will keep you updated on any new information. As there are many of you who are not overly partial to Lettuce, there may not be too much of a concern regarding the momentary situation. In our family, we might just stick to the comfy soups, stews and stir-frys!
- Make sure to check out our Bargain Corner! Always lots of very interesting bargains to find there.
For you Food Box customers, we do have about 16 different imported cheeses in our OUTLET cooler to choose from. If you want to know more, just give us a call and I will walk you through the varieties, We do not put them online due to their short stay in our coolers. That is due to our low OUTLET prices.
ATTENTION!!!!!
Anyone missing a Vaccuum Cleaner Attachment? It was found last week in a cardboard box returned by a Food Box customer.

Bundle up and hold on to your hats,
Almut
