Hello from Pfenning’s Organic,

As always, feel free to visit our Online Catalogue to see any items that are featured or on special at the top of the page.

Store Notes from Almut:

Produce NEWS:

- Another Canadian product available this week is the 3lb Anjou bag for $6.00. "Juicy, sweet and mellow" describes the taste. The Anjou pear shows no colour change during ripening. Simply ripen at room temperature.

- Want to keep it Canadian? Keep eating your Apples, as the saying goes: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." You won't find any Berries growing in Canada these days.

- All our Apples are still from B.C. - Ambrosia, Braeburn, Fuji, Gala and Pink Lady.

Veggie NEWS:

- LOCAL Celeriac Root is featured today. They come in 1/2 and 1lb size.

Here is a great recipe: CELERY ROOT SALAD with mustard sauce.

You need: 1/4 cup of mayo, 1/8 cup of sour cream, 1 Tbsp grainy mustard, 1 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice, 1/2 Tbsp Dijon mustard, pinch of salt, 1 lb celery root, 1 Tbsp finely chopped parsley.

Instructions:

1. In a bowl, mix together the mayo, crème fraiche, grainy mustard, lemon juice, Dijon mustard and salt.

2. Julienne (cut into long thin strips - with a knife or a mandolin slicer) the peeled Celeriac Root, either with a chef's knife or a slicer. Because celery root has a tendency to discolour when exposed to air, toss the pieces in the dressing as you go.

3. Add the chopped parsley and stir well. Once dressed, this salad will keep for up to 2 days in the fridge. It will lose some of its crispness the longer it sits.

- The LOCAL season for various greenhouse products has begun. With the early March sun shining stronger, the greenhouse at Organic Oasis has come alive and we are selling their Collards, Rainbow Chard and Red Dandelion. The quality as usual is at its best.

- More Grape Tomatoes came in today. Even better quality and taste than last week.. $2.25 per clam. These Grape Tomatoes are tiny and oval shaped.

As promised last week, here is the rest of the CowPot and Seed story:

- Seeds are $2.69 per pack, plus tax.

- We are selling 3 inch - 6 cell pots and individual 4 inch pots. All you need to provide is the potting soil.

- Also check out the Soil Activator Biofertilizer for richer soils and more vigorous plants. Composed of a blend of naturally-occurring soil microorganisms, and works well for indoor and outdoor plants - and it's made in Canada!

Made it through February!  It will be interesting to see what March will bring.  It has come in like a very cold lamb, hasn't it?  (Oh glorious sunshine, how I love thee)

Enjoy those rising temps,

Almut
