Produce NEWS:

- Nicola Apples have come to us all the way from B.C. - 3lb bag for $6.95

Nicola is the trade name of the apple cultivar SPA440, a cross between the Apples 'Splendour' and 'Gala.'

Nicola is large, sweet and crisp with a full-bodied taste. It has a cherry red blush over a greenish yellow background and a distinctive long, elegant, and highly flexible stem.

Don’t be fooled in to thinking that Nicola is best when freshly picked from the tree because the apples actually taste better with storage. So throw this one in your fridge and enjoy it for months.

- Apples and Citrus make up the bulk of our fruit display this week.

- Mandarins and super sweet juicy Navel Oranges, all from California, are my pick of fresh 'vitamin C' intake. Something to look into when you are a bit snifflly.

- Kent Mangoes are the highlight of this week. Beautiful with 'red cheeks'       - $2.25 each.

Veggie NEWS:

- Red Radish bunches are a colourful interlude to our vegetable display. Great for snacks and in salads.

- Grape Tomatoes on the Vine from Quebec greenhouses. Beautiful quality     - $4.75 each.

- A new Romaine batch came in. The heads are a little smaller and the price came down. Perfect quality and freshness - $3.25 each head.

- We have all the Kale colours in stock. Purple/Red - Black - Green. All are showing superior quality.

- Make sure to check out our Bargain Corner! Always lots of very interesting bargains to find there.

"Farmers feed Cities." Most people have seen the sticker with this slogan.

At this time of the year, farmers in Canada are flipping through the pages of various seed catalogues. They are dreaming of what to grow (and earn their living while doing so) for the city folks in the coming season. Their intent and focus on success is 100%.

But will the weather and growing conditions cooperate? Will there be enough rain? Too much rain? Too hot? Too cold? Too mant pests? New plant maladies? Time will tell at harvest time - and beyond.

Now jumping to California's and Mexico's Celery fields. Those farmers planned out their Celery harvest many months ago, just like our Ontario farmers would have. As you might be aware, Celery is a very high-priced commodity at this time. We seem to run into this most every winter - one or the other produce price skyrocketing incomprehensibly. At this point not even available to buy. Again, weather and growing conditions are to blame.

Suggestion: Let's be patient, stay flexible and just opt to eat another vegetable (maybe a local cabbage?) instead. And maybe send a brief thought to the farmers and farm workers over in California who also wants to feed the cities of North America... and feed their families at the same time.

I have yet to meet a farmer who is not very serious and dedicated about the crops they are growing.

In the meantime, enjoy our "real" winter,

Almut
