Here are the Store News and Specials from Almut:
FRUIT NEWS:
- The newly arrived Navel Oranges from California are hitting the newsstand this week. The Orange season in California has begun. These Navels have everything you want in a Navel: easy peel, great flavour, juicy and sweet.
- It is Apples and Pears from homeland (mainly B.C.) Canada. This is their season.
Lots of Apple varieties to choose from.
VEGGIE NEWS:
- The LOCAL fields may be sleeping for the winter now, but there are plenty of storage crops tucked away and available at Pfenning's Store. We have inventory of the following LOCAL Greens for about 1 to 2 weeks: Green Kale, Spinach, Collard Greens, Green Leaf Lettuce, Fennel, Leek and Parsley. All the LOCAL "Roots" will be available all winter long.
No exciting new vegetables arrived on the scene this week. With the weather changing to colder temperatures, our eating habits change. Now we are into 'warming' foods - Stews, Soups and Baked Veggies. And the ingredients for those dishes are exactly what is in season right now. It is simple and flavourful cooking we need to focus on. Add some local Chicken or Beef with that or keep it vegetarian. Simple versus fancy cooking keeps the stress out of midweek dinners.

REMINDER: Fresh Chicken NEWS:
Local fresh Chickens are coming next Wednesday Nov 20th.
We will have a few extras, but it is better to put your name on the list. These chickens have yellow tinted skin and fat. That means they had outside access with grass, ate bugs and enjoyed real sunshine. White flesh in a chicken is more like "teddy bear stuffing" - no nutrients and no flavour.
The price is $5.25/lb
EGG NOG !!!
- A treat for the season is the Harmony Eggnog. It is here until Christmas. Indulge by adding a tad of rum for an after-dinner treat (Wolfgang's favourite).

We're still debating whether these past days were just an early winter teaser, a winter primer or a fluke. In any case, thank you again to all of you who put out a blanket to cover up your Food Boxes on these past wintry delivery mornings. Next week is expected to be a bit milder.
