STORE NOTES from Almut:

FRUIT NEWS:

- Navel Oranges are the perfect Orange for peeling & eating. This week $1.00 each - very sweet and juicy.

- Just giving you the heads up! B.C. Apples are winding down in varieties. 3lb Fuji and 3lb Ambrosia bags are coming to an end soon. Lots of Gala Apples still available.

VEGGIE NEWS:

This week we are celebrating the colour "green." Next door the Irish Pub Kennedy's will soon be serving green beer, and people from far and wide will come to celebrate "Paddy's Day!"

- Green, crisp and big Romaine Lettuce heads just arrived today - $2.75 each.

- Brussel Sprouts are still well-priced and 'green' in colour for $5.88/lb.

I steam them cut into halves until soft, but still bright green. Then I lightly roast them in the frying pan mixed with onions. Serve on Rice or Potatoes. It's so delicious!!

- Fennel Bulbs are very big this week and also dropped in price - $3.95 each.

How to cook with Fennel:

"Fennel can be boiled, braised, sauteed, grilled, roasted, steamed, stir-fried or eaten raw."

"Fennel is great combined with garlic + tomatoes + onion, asparagus, apples + arugula + blue cheeses, watercress + pears, pasta, fish, seafood, lamb, and potatoes."

Used often in Italian cooking, "it's also great thrown into tomato sauces, over pizza, and baked into Focaccia bread."

- Want to enjoy LOCAL Food? We have lots of choices, from storage root veggies to a great variety of 'Greens' from the Organic Oasis greenhouse. For example, Salad Greens, Spinach, Arugula, Rainbow Chard, Dandelion bunches. Don't forget the Shitake and Crimini Mushrooms and locally grown/pressed Oils from Mat's. Mat's next oil pressing (Sunflower, Flax and Hemp) will be March 23rd. The 50 Mile Diet is still possible in the month of March. We do take special orders for Oil.

ZERO-WASTE continutes...

We urge you to please bring your own containers (glass, plastic, nylon, etc.) for buying food from our bulk bins. Have the courage to say NO to plastic!

- Need spices and herbs? Bring your spice jars from home for refilling.

It can be done and we will help you transform your habit into a more plastic-free life. We do have free glass jars available in case you forget your own containers.

Food Box Customers!

We can put your bulk dry goods into clean Pinehedge (1L size) jars if you want no plastic bags. Just pay $1.00 for the jar which you get back upon return of the empty jar. Please DO let us know if you want the plastic-free option.

GARDEN SEEDS

- With spring just around the corner comes our Organic Seed rack. If you need any Organic Seeds to start your tomato or pepper transplants on the window sill, check out the varieties we have available.

Looks a lot like the promise of spring may be kept. We're all looking forward to it!

School families - enjoy your March Break,

Almut
