Here are the Store News and Specials from Almut:

- The last fresh "Chicken run" was a huge success. We could have offered more than we had, such was the demand for these local, fresh, organic birds. I hope for all you Chicken receivers that you may get many nutritious and happy meals out of the LOCAL poultry bounty. Nothing better than a chicken soup or a roasted chicken dinner in the winter months.

- So here it comes, and please don't make a face......but I need to ask the question: Anyone need a Turkey for Christmas? If you do, let me know as soon as possible. The Turkey List is up. The price is the $6.00/lb.

Produce NEWS:

The harvest in the fields on Pfenning`s Farm is more or less finished. All that is out there are a few rows of Carrots, greens such as Kale, Chard, Collards, Spinach, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Parsley, Beet Bunches...  AS LONG AS SUPPLIES LASTS.
All the LOCAL Greens are showing perfect quality. Colder temperatures does that to the produce.
The frost has upped the sugar content significantly in the BROCCOLI, just in time for Halloween!  It's also got a purple tinge (don't worry, it's completely normal for this time of year), and kind of looks like a curly purple clown wig.  TRICK OR TREAT!

- Local Pfenning's Cauliflower is absolutely stunning right now for $2.75 each. Still some in the fields.

- It`s still the season for a Potato-Leek soup. Maybe add the Cauliflower as well.  Leek still comes from the Pfenning's Farm fields and is at the height of its season. Average stalk is $1.50-$2.25, depending on size.

- We thought there was no more RED LEAF LETTUCE, but the Pfenning's Farm with 800 + acres do sometimes get some surprises. The growth has been slow, and they are not bulky big - but they are quite lovely with surprisingly tender and soft leaves.

- Spinach bunches from Pfenning's Farm are at their all time best right now. Dark green leaves and super quality. Have you ever had Creamed Spinach on Potatoes? My personal favourite at this time of year. Here`s the recipe again:

Directions:

1.Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add chopped spinach, and cook just until wilted, about 1 minute.
2.In a large saucepan, heat butter over medium. Add onion and garlic; season with salt, pepper and a little nutmeg (just a pinch).
3.Add whip cream/milk or cream cheese (make sure it is melted) and spinach to saucepan with onions. Stir and voila, it is done. Serve with steamed potatoes. Simple but good.

I do recommend Harmony Whip Cream with it.

- Again, the Apples available right now are Gala, Ambrosia, Mac & Honeycrisp Apples. All are from B.C.

- Make sure to check out our Bargain Corner! Lots of very interesting bargains there this week.

We are sending this out a bit earlier tonight so you can all go out there with your excited little ones and enjoy your Halloween outing.

Happy Halloween!
