Produce NEWS:
It is winter and we are hibernating with warming soups and stews and other delicious comfort foods. The ancient Chinese medicine practitioners discovered that most foods have either cooling or warming characteristics. When you eat cooling foods, they are adding cooling effects to your body and eating warm foods will add warming effects to your body. Interestingly, root veggies, onions and garlic, for example, are considered warming foods, just when they are readily available!
- Apples and Citrus make up the bulk of our fruit display this week.
- Try a Kiwi for a change. You can cut them in half and eat them with an egg spoon right out of its skin. They are a delightful vitamin boost.
Here is what is in 1 medium Kiwi fruit:
Calories - 42
protein - 0.8 grams
total fat - 0.4 grams
fiber - 2.1 grams
vitamin C - 64 milligrams
vitamin A - 3 micrograms
iron - 0.2 milligrams
potassium - 252 milligrams
folate - 17 micrograms
Did you know? The fuzzy little kiwi also packs in the vital nutrients vitamin E, copper, vitamin K, choline, magnesium, and phosphorus. The kiwifruit is higher in vitamin C per ounce than most other fruits.
- Our organic Blueberries are from Chili and are $4.50 each. Very tasty.

- Local Squash is nearing its end. Only Butternut and Spaghetti left. The imported Kabocha Squash is already at the Store.
- Broccoli ($3.25) and Cauliflower ($4.50) are back with a normal price tag on it.

Last weekend Wolfgang and myself went to visit the Guelph Organic Conference & Trade Show. The trade show featured many local Ontario vendors (eg. Crofters Jam, Mountain Gem Coffee, Camino Chocolates, Little Stream Bakery, Pfenning's Farm, Tradition Miso etc) selling and sampling their products. This is the show to be educated about anything that concerns organic. From learning the 'know how' of growing to certification, the process to the finished product in your shopping bag.
I was astonished to see so many people/families walking around at the show. Such an interest in the organic lifestyle!
I would like to share a quote by Jane Goodall (monkey lady):
"How could we have ever believed that it was a good idea to grow our food with poison?"
And in 2019 it is not stopping with the food. We have poison in our clothing, furniture, wall paints, floors, plastic cutlery and dishes, food storage containers, cosmetic products, our water supply, pharmaceutical medicine etc. In other words it is everywhere! In the air, the soil and the water.
It all starts with each one of us humans. Do we really need that much plastic in our lives? We at Pfenning's Store will make an extra effort in 2019 to use as little plastic as possible for packaging your food. Let us know your comments please.
Have a wonderful start into February,
Almut
