Produce 'Picks' of the week:

• B.C. Apples are still going strong and experienced a price drop in the meantime. 3lb Gala (great eating), 3lb Braeburn and 3lb Spartan (great for baking) apples are now all $5.75 per bag.

• The Navel Oranges from USA are something to brag about. Yes, they are $1.75 ea, but they are as big as a grapefruit and very juicy.

• Organic Blackberries are a treat and well priced for this time of season.

• Green Swiss Chard looks like it came from our local fields. The quality is superb!!

   

• Red Beet bunches are equally as beautiful. The tops are simply gorgeous and can be used in smoothies.

• Local Burdock Root is now in stock.

• Green Peppers from Mexico are nice in size and average $1.25 each. 

​

We are now in the deep winter season and our thinking - produce-wise - is in the "Root Season." This is the season when we should not look for Cherries, Strawberries, Grapes, Sweet Corn and Green Beans in produce displays. Our feet are rooted here in Canada, and the best food to eat right now are the Root Vegetables. So fill your pots with delicious soups and stews. You can get such great and tasty results by baking/roasting the root vegetables in the oven.
 

Chinese Medicine distinguishes between 'warming' and 'cooling' foods. In the winter we want to eat 'warming' foods. If you are eating seasonally, then you got it right! Root Vegetables are 'warming' foods. 
 

So be a 'Root Warrior' and embrace the cold season with all its cooking delights.
