Here are the STORE NEWS and SPECIALS from Almut:
FRUIT NEWS:
- Lemons are on sale this week. $0.75 each or 3 for $2.00.
- We are selling loose Apples besides all the 3lb bags. For loose Apples we have GALA and Honeycrisp from B.C. The saying: "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" still has its value. Apples have an abundance in Vitamine C, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin K, riboflavin, thiamin, niacin, and folate.
- Loose Bosc Pears are available this week.
- Red and Green Grapes from South Africa - $7.02/lb are still a tasty treat this week.
VEGGIE NEWS:
- Broccoli prices are hitting the 'upper $$ level' again. At $8.00/head, we are sitting this one out. A great alternative is Green Cabbage, Nappa Cabbage or Kale.
- Dianne from Golden Acres (north of Stratford) is back with her incomparable Chantenay Carrots!
- Belgian Endives have dropped in price to $3.95 for 300g. It is a mildly bitter vegetable. The Belgian Endives may be eaten baked, steamed, boiled, grilled, or raw. The leaves can be separated, torn up, and added to other greens for a mixed salad, or the endive leaves may be served by themselves. Individual endive leaves may be filled with hummus, tuna, or chicken salad for an elegant presentation.
Have you been missing Tomatoes? We are too. Here is an update: This is not an oversight, they have been unavailable. Heavy rains, flooding and cold are to blame in the growing regions of Mexico. (This has also affected cucumber and zucchini... you will have noticed higher prices on these.)
Farming is not without its challenges!
- We do have gorgeous looking fresh Dill bunches this week. Potato or Egg salad (we have that too!) both do very well with some fresh dill in them. So do any fish dishes.
- For you Salad lovers, we have Red Boston Lettuce this week. Very soft and tender leaves.
FISH NEWS:
- Fish lovers rejoice! Organic Atlantic Salmon from Norway is back in stock (after being away for a while).
OUTLET NEWS (BARGAIN Corner):
- Our Bargain Butter section is loaded with all sizes and shapes. Check it out. Salted, Semi Salted, Unsalted, Organic - we have it all.
- L'Ancetre Mild Cheddar 325g is on Sale for $5.75 each. Regular $10.75.
- Jordan's 'Morning Crisp Cereal - Bursting With Nuts' (dated May 3rd) is back for $4.50/500g.
This weekend, Jan 25th/26th, the Guelph University is hosting its 39th annual Organic Conference and Trade Show. Admission to the trade show on multiple floors where many vendors are selling their organic products is free. Pfenning's Farm will again be offering its tasty freshly-made Carrot Juice - free!
