Apple Magic

By Margaret Hillart

In every single apple lies
A truly magical surprise.
Instead of slicing down,
slice through
And watch the star
appear for you!

(..and that star in the middle is sacred geometry at is best)

VEGGIE NEWS:

- Local Sweet Potatoes have arrived - $2.72/lb. Some are as big as 2lb each.

Perfect for sweet potato fries. Juilienne them (that's cutting into thin strips), drizzle with olive oil, season gently with thyme, sage and black pepper. Bake on a baking sheet at 350° F for 20 to 25 min until desired texture is achieved.

- The last gorgeous looking LOCAL Field Cucumbers arrived today. They are fairly big in size (some are up to 1lb). They are $1.95 each.

- Big size Local Tomatoes (greenhouse-grown) from Leamington for 95ȼ each.

Oh, how we look back, yearning for those backyard summer tomatoes and their amazing flavour.

- The last two 'ROOTS' arrived this week: Celeriac Root and Black Radishes.

Celeriac is actually a type of celery that didn't grow into the light green stalks you usually see. Rather, it’s a bulbous veggie about the size of a grapefruit with a mild, slightly sweet, celery-like flavour. It originated in the Mediterranean, can be enjoyed raw or cooked and works well in salads, as well as mashed, baked, roasted or boiled and in soups. You will see it a lot more throughout our winter.

Here is the  "ROOT" line-up for this winter: Beets, Carrots, Celeriac Root, Onion, Garlic, Parsley Root, Parsnip, Potatoes, Rutabaga and Purple Top Turnip, Watermelon Radish, Black Radish Daikon, and Sweet Potato. All locally-grown and here to serve you beautiful meals throughout the winter months. Simple pleasures, but it truly makes us eat like kings and queens.

- Very beautiful Red Leaf Lettuce from Pfenning's Farm arrived here today.

Most likely the last box we see from them this season. The cooler weather created  very tender, crisp, big and geourgous looking heads. Did this sales pitch entice you to have one more bowl of local Lettuce? I hope so!

Going home now to make a Salad. With boiled Eggs, Red Radishes, Red Onions and Dried Cranberries. Top it off with my home-made vinaigrette.

Bon appetit!

Enjoy the beautiful fall colours and have a great rest of the week,

Almut
