Produce NEWS:

Looks like the field harvest is almost over. Just in time too, as the rain is not making work out there any easier. They are still working on bringing Carrots and some Beets in, but that will soon be done too. They will be scrambling tomorrow to bring in as much Leek and Kale in before the heavy frost that is expected in the coming nights.

We still have a very full variety of local veggies available at the Store - and at our Food Box customers' disposal as well - for about another 1-2 weeks. Visit the Vegetable Section to see what is available LOCALLY - it says it in the Additional Details at the bottom of each product page.

The transition to imported produce is moving ahead now quickly. Good-bye and thank you to a wonderful local growing season. We will be happy to see all the local storage veggies in the coming cold months.

- Finally! The LOCAL Jerusalem Artichokes (or Sunchokes) are here.

Sunchokes are high in potassium. A one cup serving of sunchokes contains 643 mg of potassium, which is essential for overall health and can help to reduce heart disease. This tuber plant has been used in the diet since ancient times and is known for reducing high blood sugar levels. Individuals who suffer from diabetes may find that consuming Jerusalem Artichokes on a regular basis can help them maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

- Local Pfenning's Cauliflower is absolutely stunning right now for $2.75 each. 50 heads left in the store, that is it!

- It`s still the season for a Potato-Leek soup. Adding the Cauliflower is a great idea. Leek is still from the Pfenning's Farm and is still available for a little while. Average stalk is $1.50-$2.25, depending on size.

- Beautiful Grape Tomatoes came in from Quebec today! $4.00/pint. Indulge...

- We have some Ontario Empire Apples in the Store now. They are $6.50/ bag.

Empire Apples are red, juicy, firm, crunchy and sweet. They ripen during September and October and will keep until January. The original seed was a cross between the varieties McIntosh and Red Delicious. Empire apples are excellent for eating and in salads, and good for sauce, baking, pies and freezing.

- California Navel Oranges are here for the season. They are juicy and sweet. $1.50 each.

- Grapefruit from California are back after a period of absence.

Here is some interesting info about the once popular Grapefruit. In 1976, at the height of America's love for grapefruit, few fruits were more popular. The average person living in the United States ate almost 25 pounds of grapefruit each year. Since then, however, fresh grapefruit consumption has plunged by 70 percent, and total grapefruit consumption, which includes the processed kind often used for juice, has tumbled by almost 80 percent.

- Cantaloupe Melons are spicing things up this week. They are big and beautiful for $4.75 each.

- Make sure to check out our Bargain Corner! Always lots of very interesting bargains to find there.

Enjoy the gradual descent towards winter,

Almut
