Here are the Store News and Specials from Almut:
FRUIT NEWS:
- More Apple Magic this week: We have LOCAL Spartan and Cortland Apples available. They can be ordered loose by the unit.
- Kiwis from Italy are back in stock. Sold by units - $0.65 each.
- Anjou and Bartlett Pears from B.C. are available.
- 4 years ago we saw the last Sheldon Pear at the Store. Now they are available again. Locally grown in Elmira.
Check out this heritage pear. The pear is named after those who first grew it, the Sheldon family. The tree was developed from the seeds of a pear tree the family picked up in Virginia. The fruit that grew on the tree became very popular. The original tree is said to still be at the family homestead.
VEGGIE NEWS:
- Local Sweet Potatoes are still going strong - $2.72/lb. Some are as big as 2lb each.
If you don't know yet: Perfect for sweet potato fries. Juilienne them (that's cutting into thin strips), drizzle with olive oil, season gently with thyme, sage and black pepper. Bake on a baking sheet at 350° F for 20 to 25 min until desired texture is achieved.
- We still have very beautiful Red Leaf Lettuce and Green Leaf Lettuce from Pfenning's Farm.
This may well be the last of the LOCAL LETTUCE, alas! The Romaine we have in the Store is already from California.

While the local season is gradually winding down, we are continually shifting our produce availability to the warmer regions of the USA - California to a large extent. Enjoy the local bounty while it lasts.
The other day I picked up a great book at our local library: "The Dorito Effect" by Mark Schatzker. The surprising new truth about food and flavour (not really so new).
I always knew that the commercial food production and what food is available in big box stores is not of the highest and cleanest standards. The food industry of today is driven primarily by profit before quality. What I am reading in this book is opening my eyes of how 'bad' those standards really are and that the deterioration of our food quality has been going on since as early as the 1940s to 50s.
As I read on, I may pass on and share some of the bigger eye openers out of this great book. It is well worth the read.
Here an excerpt:
" - everything we grow is bigger and cheaper, but blander than ever. At the same time, technology now lets us produce in the lab the very flavors that have been lost on the farm. And the result is that we have utterly transformed what, and how much, we eat."
Fresh Chicken Update:
Our Oct. 30th Fresh Chicken Run has been postponed 2 weeks further into November. The chickens (which are being fed organic feed and are outside) need more growing time. They are too small yet. We will let you know the butchering date as soon as we know. Thanks for your patience.
A great rest of the week to you all,
Almut
