Here are the Store News and Specials from Almut:
FRUIT NEWS:
- Honeycrisp Apples in 3lb bags are back in stock.
Here is its story: Honeycrisp Apples have rapidly become a prized commercial commodity, as their sweetness, firmness, and tartness make them an ideal apple for eating raw. "...The apple wasn't bred to grow, store or ship well. It was bred for taste: crisp, with balanced sweetness and acidity." It has larger cells than most apple cultivars, a trait which is correlated with juiciness, as theoretically a higher number of cell rupture when bitten releases more juice in the mouth.
There you go - let some science play in with your simple eating enjoyment!
- Satsuma Mandarins from California have landed - so delicious and juicy! Once they show up, the Christmas season is not far away. On average, 5 Mandarins make up 1lb. Easy to peel, very juicy and sweet, truly a delight to eat.
VEGGIE NEWS:
We just bought the last 192 bunches of LOCAL Green Kale from Pfenning's Farm in New Hamburg.
The quality is superb, the bunches are huge and heavy. Go ahead and get Kale crazy and creative - for $2.50/bunch.
- Broccoli is really back! 3 weeks ago it was $8.00 a bunch, and now it is only $2.25 each. Even more on the menu for us!
- Our "Nutty Sale" goes on!! It is Butternut Squash time. We are selling them by units:
1.5lb size for $1.50 each
2.5lb to 3lb size for $2.50 each
4.5lb to 5lb size $3.50 each.
You choose how much soup or baked Squash you want to make and order the size you need.
- LOCAL Nappa Cabbage is the Veggie of the week. So versatile and delicious, raw in a "slaw" or cooked. If you're looking for a new way to cook Nappa Cabbage, you've got lots of options. Nappa Cabbage (also called Chinese Cabbage) is great sliced and sautéed with onions and garlic. For a caramelized flavour, cut the cabbage into wedges and roast them until the cabbage is tender. Drizzle them with a sweet and sour sauce before serving. You can even throw wedges of cabbage on a hot grill and cook them until they're charred.
As we are switching from our LOCAL season into a predominantly IMPORT produce season, prices will change more dramatically as we know from experience. It will be 'up' and 'down' based on the weather and harvest difficulties in the west. If you want to stay on a budget, we are offering lots of local vegetable choices. If you are creative and don't mind experimenting, the choices can be endless.
EGG NOG !!!
- A treat for the season is the Harmony Eggnog. It is here ONLY until Christmas. Indulge by adding a tad of rum for an after-dinner treat, or maybe add some to your coffee. If you need any delivered along with your Food Boxes - please pre-order!
Check out the Bargain Corner. A few new items have been uploaded.
BEESWAX CANDLES
Now that we are moving more and more into the festive season before Christmas, we have stocked up on all the 100% Beeswax Candles you need. They are made in Kaslo, B.C. and come in all sizes, shapes and colours. Candles create such a beautiful atmosphere, make for timeless gifts and are always appreciated and used.
As the days get shorter and the nights darker and colder burning a candle for dinner gets our household into the 'cozy' mood. Try it out.
Enjoy the last November week in all its rainy wetness, blowing leaves, the hint of winter coming and the magic of the holiday season,
Almut
